International Day of Older Persons is organized by SDDF

The International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) is observed every year on October 1 to recognize the contributions of older persons, promote their rights and dignity, and build inclusive, age‑friendly societies. The UN General Assembly proclaimed this observance in 1990 (Resolution 45/106), with the first commemoration held in 1991. It builds on milestones like the United Nations Principles for Older Persons (1991) and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (2002), which together call for a society for all ages.

The 2025 Global Theme

“Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well‑Being, Our Rights.”
In 2025, the UN’s focus is on recognizing older persons as agents of change—amplifying their voices, advancing their well‑being, and ensuring full enjoyment of their human rights in policy and practice. The UN notes the world’s 60+ population has more than doubled since 1995, reaching ~1.2 billion in 2025, with profound implications for health systems, social protection, and inclusive development.

Why It Matters for SDDF

For the Sustainable Disadvantaged Development Foundation (SDDF), IDOP is a platform to advance inclusive and sustainable development with older persons at the center—especially those facing disadvantage. Our initiatives align with the Sustainable Development Goals—notably SDG 3 (Good Health and Well‑being), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities)—by working to reduce barriers and expand opportunities for healthy, active, and dignified ageing.
